Kuldeep Yadav, who is seizing his opportunity in the Asia Cup, has reflected on his experience during the England tour, where he was unable to play in any of the five Tests despite favorable pitch conditions. He described the tour as “challenging” but emphasized that he had “clear communication” with head coach Gautam Gambhir regarding the need for greater batting depth in the team.
“At times, during 3-4 matches, I felt I was fit to play. However, I was sidelined because the team needed more batsmen,” Kuldeep explained in Dubai before India’s match against Oman in the Asia Cup. “The communication was straightforward, which I believe is very important.”
“Gautam was very clear. There were moments when I believed I could have been selected, but the requirement for batting depth meant I was not chosen. It wasn’t about my skills or fitness; it was mainly about team combination and conditions,” he added.
Kuldeep, who had not participated in any international matches since India’s Champions Trophy victory, spoke about the difficulties of not playing regularly. He took advantage of this time to enhance his skills and fitness. “The lack of rhythm when returning from a break is a challenge, but working on my fitness and bowling volume was beneficial,” he noted.
He added, “It’s easy to blame external factors, but true growth comes from self-reflection. Understanding your weaknesses and areas for improvement is vital. Every player has a choice in their development path, but working hard is essential. Cricket has its ups and downs; even without matches, you can focus on self-improvement and be prepared for opportunities.”
The 30-year-old also drew inspiration from the strong bench strength seen in various football teams. He found insights into maintaining a competitive spirit and appreciating team dynamics by observing athletes in other sports. “Seeing how teams communicate and support one another has been quite motivating,” he concluded.
