Status of Kyle Tucker and Cubs’ Plans
CINCINNATI — As the Chicago Cubs strategize for the postseason, the uncertainty surrounding Kyle Tucker’s condition looms large. The All-Star outfielder has been sidelined due to a strained left calf, missing nearly all of September.
Consultation and Treatment
Tucker left the team prior to last week’s celebration in Pittsburgh to seek treatment from a physical therapist in Tampa, Florida. Having grown up in Tampa, Tucker is familiar with this group, as he has worked with them during his offseason training and while with the Houston Astros.
Rehabilitation Progress
Currently, Tucker hasn’t progressed to running in his rehab, although Cubs manager Craig Counsell reported he has been hitting. Following multiple therapy sessions, Tucker plans to travel to Chicago on Monday for a reevaluation before Tuesday’s game at Wrigley Field. As it stands, Counsell is likely to exclude Tucker from that evening’s lineup.
Need for At-Bats
Should Tucker remain unavailable for Tuesday’s game, only five regular-season games would remain. “Of course,” Counsell remarked, “you’d want some at-bats. And he’s expressed that.” However, Tucker might be one of those hitters capable of stepping up in the playoffs without extensive pre-game preparation.
Past Success and Current Concerns
Tucker’s history demonstrates adaptability; after returning from a fractured right shin last season, he resumed his impactful contributions quickly. While the Cubs wished for a different scenario, they know individual players must shine in October for continued success.
Shota Imanaga’s Challenges
In addition, Shota Imanaga is also trying to refine his performance ahead of the playoffs. After a two-month stint on the injured list due to a left hamstring strain, Imanaga aims for better consistency, especially after allowing 29 home runs this season compared to 27 last year.
Emerging Talents and Future Prospects
Daniel Palencia is making strides toward a return to the Cubs’ playoff bullpen, having tested his shoulder successfully during a rehab outing. Meanwhile, Brad Keller, previously struggling with the White Sox, has emerged as a standout reliever for the Cubs, expressing optimism about his team’s winning season and personal growth on the mound.
