Jacob Bethell has the opportunity to secure a spot in England’s Ashes opener during the upcoming white-ball series in New Zealand, although Rob Key refutes claims of a “complex plan” to replace Ollie Pope.
Pope’s hold on the crucial number three position has faced significant scrutiny throughout the year. Despite maintaining his position for all six Tests this summer, there are no assurances that he will retain it for the series against Australia.
The announcement that Harry Brook will serve as vice-captain—a role Pope has occupied for three years—has further weakened Pope’s position. This series of three T20s and three ODIs in New Zealand could be pivotal.
Since Bethell is on this trip and Pope is not, only one candidate will have the chance to demonstrate their skills.
Key acknowledged this situation but reiterated that Brook’s advancement does not imply a foregone conclusion for Pope. “We genuinely believe Harry is the most suitable vice-captain,” he stated.

Ben Stokes (captain), Harry Brook (vice-captain), Jofra Archer, Gus Atkinson, Shoaib Bashir, Jacob Bethell, Brydon Carse, Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Will Jacks, Ollie Pope, Matthew Potts, Joe Root, Jamie Smith, Josh Tongue, Mark Wood.
Key emphasized, “There is no intricate scheme to make it easier to drop Ollie Pope by stripping him of the vice-captaincy. If we determine that someone else can perform better in any batting position, we’ll make a change.” He added that Pope currently maintains the position and that team decisions are typically made just before the first Test.
With England continuing to evaluate players, Key expressed interest in observing more of Jacob Bethell in white-ball formats, suggesting that increased play will allow them to learn more about his abilities.
