Joe Root has cautioned that England plans to approach Australia differently in this highly-anticipated Ashes series this winter.
Ben Stokes will lead a 16-man squad to Australia for the five-Test series running from November 21 to January 8, aiming to reclaim the urn for the first time since 2015.
Root, the leading run-scorer in England’s history, leads a batting lineup dedicated to breaking Australia’s stronghold and achieving a landmark victory on their home turf.
Speaking to Sky Sports News, Root said, “This is a significant series against a team that has an excellent home record, particularly against us. However, I believe we have the opportunity to hit them with something a little different this time.”
He further emphasized, “We’re heading in with a different team, mentality, and style of play. We’ve been executing some solid cricket recently, and I hope that translates into outstanding performances and potential historical outcomes.”
England’s Ashes Squad
Ben Stokes (captain), Harry Brook (vice-captain), Jofra Archer, Gus Atkinson, Shoaib Bashir, Jacob Bethell, Brydon Carse, Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Will Jacks, Ollie Pope, Matthew Potts, Joe Root, Jamie Smith, Josh Tongue, Mark Wood.
Bowling Depth: A Key Asset
One of England’s fresh strengths lies in the bowling department, enhanced by the return of Jofra Archer and Mark Wood. Their inclusion provides head coach Brendon McCullum with multiple fast-bowling options.
Wood has been selected despite missing the recent English summer due to injury, while Archer is still reviving his long-form career after several setbacks. Stokes’ ability to bowl is also uncertain due to shoulder concerns.
Root Sees Potential in Bowler’s Pace
Root believes that with a formidable bowling attack at their disposal, particularly with Archer and Wood’s exceptional speed, they can significantly influence the series. He stated, “This is the first time in recent tours that we can challenge them with real pace and multiple options.”
Focus on Team Success
Despite not scoring a century in his 14 Tests in Australia, Root is committed to prioritizing the team’s success over individual achievements. He remarked, “This series isn’t about me scoring hundreds; it’s about us winning the Ashes. If I manage to hit big scores, it benefits the team’s chances.”
Maintaining a Consistent Approach
Former England captain Nasser Hussain highlighted on the Sky Sports Cricket podcast that England has remained steadfast in their approach. He stated, “They’ve consistently adhered to their principles, which focus on aggressive batting and fast bowling. This series is no exception.”
