Captain Jarrod Bowen secured a point for new West Ham manager Nuno Espirito Santo in a 1-1 stalemate against Everton on Monday Night Football.
The Hammers, who recently dismissed Graham Potter, appointed Nuno as head coach on Saturday. They appeared likely to suffer from a consistent issue when Michael Keane scored with a header in the first half.
This marked the eighth goal West Ham conceded from corner situations this season, already halfway to the Premier League record for the most conceded by a team in a single campaign. Nuno appeared frustrated on the sidelines.
However, he was elated on 65 minutes when Bowen capitalized on a loose ball at the back post and powered a shot off Keane, making it the first goal scored by an opposing team at Everton’s new Hill Dickinson Stadium in the Premier League.
Sky Sports’ Jamie Carragher praised Bowen afterward, stating, “Bowen is one of the greatest players to play for the club,” as Bowen edged closer to Michail Antonio’s record of 68 Premier League goals for West Ham.
Crysencio Summerville had seen a shot brilliantly saved by Jordan Pickford just prior to Bowen’s equalizer, and Bowen nearly scored again shortly after. Everton, on the other hand, lamented their inability to convert several opportunities at the start of the second half.
Although Everton returned to their starting lineup from the Merseyside derby after a midweek Carabao Cup loss, West Ham’s Nuno also made notable changes. His first match saw Soungoutou Magassa and Niclas Fullkrug enter the squad, with James Ward-Prowse absent from the matchday roster despite being a regular starter under Potter.
