Yevgeny Kafelnikov shared his insights on Daniil Medvedev ahead of the China Open.
As the only other Russian to have secured a Grand Slam singles title, Kafelnikov frequently comments on Medvedev.
In a recent statement, Kafelnikov questioned Medvedev’s work ethic, implying that his training intensity has diminished.
Medvedev aimed to counter Kafelnikov’s criticism by advancing to the semifinals of the China Open, including a victory over third-ranked Alexander Zverev in the quarterfinals.
Kafelnikov on Medvedev’s Psychological Stability
On a recent episode of ‘Hardcourt’, Kafelnikov reflected on Medvedev’s performance at the China Open.
“We should focus on the positive aspects of [Daniil] Medvedev,” he remarked, noting that criticism has followed him for being realistic.
He added, “Winning three matches in a row indicates that his confidence might be returning. It’s been a while since he achieved that this season.”
Kafelnikov Impressed by Medvedev’s Quarterfinal Win
Kafelnikov highlighted Medvedev’s ability to maintain his serve during the match against Zverev, despite facing breakpoints.
“The most significant aspect is that he didn’t lose his serve,” Kafelnikov stated, analyzing Medvedev’s statistical performance.
Reflecting on Past Rivalry with Johansson
Having faced Thomas Johansson 14 times, Kafelnikov described him as a particularly challenging opponent, noting his discomfort while playing against him.
“Johansson was a tough player for me,” Kafelnikov said, recalling how he struggled due to Johansson’s relentless playing style.
Medvedev’s Upcoming Matches
Medvedev, seeded 16th in Shanghai, has received a bye into the second round where he will compete against either Dalibor Svrcina or Yibing Wu.
His recent performance suggests he has a strong chance of advancing deep into the tournament, especially with Carlos Alcaraz’s withdrawal.
As the only former champion in the draw’s top half, Medvedev aspires to make a significant run at the Shanghai Masters, potentially facing elite opponents like Jannik Sinner or Novak Djokovic.
Expectations are high for Medvedev as he prepares for his second-round match on October 3.
