Jordan Henderson Reflects on Two-Year Struggle After Liverpool Exit
Former Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson has shared his ongoing struggle following his departure from Anfield after 12 years with the club, during which he celebrated numerous prestigious titles. He admits that for the past two years, he has found it difficult to come to terms with his exit.
In a candid admission, Henderson revealed that he was so affected by leaving Liverpool that he couldn’t bring himself to watch his old team on television. He likened the emotional turmoil he experienced to a painful breakup, indicating that it has been one of the hardest times in his career.
Now 35 years old, Henderson’s departure to Saudi Arabia two years ago sent shockwaves through the football community. He initially joined Al-Ettifaq but spent only six months there before moving to Ajax in the Netherlands. After 18 months in Amsterdam, he returned to the Premier League by signing with Brentford this summer.
Despite his achievements, Henderson admits that the scars from his exit remain. He explained that leaving Liverpool was particularly tough because the club had played a significant role in his life for so long, making it hard to adjust when it was suddenly over.
Reflecting on his time since leaving, Henderson noted, “I couldn’t watch many games, especially Liverpool’s matches. It was simply too difficult.” He emphasized that this period felt overwhelmingly challenging due to his deep connection with the club.
Henderson’s international career also appeared uncertain following his exit, as he wasn’t included in Gareth Southgate’s squad for Euro 2024. However, under Thomas Tuchel’s management, he has since found his way back to form and is now eyeing a place in next year’s World Cup.
Henderson expressed that, although the past few years have been tough, he has utilized these experiences as motivation throughout his career. He has learned to filter out criticism to focus on his objectives, highlighting that overcoming challenges has made him stronger as a player and individual.
