Defending the Game Plan
Las Vegas Raiders offensive coordinator Chip Kelly responded to critiques on Thursday, following coach Pete Carroll’s comments about the team’s offensive strategy. Carroll emphasized the need for more rushing plays and play-action in their game plan.
Game Analysis
Kelly clarified, “That’s what our game plan is every game.” He pointed out that despite trailing in their recent 40-6 loss to the Indianapolis Colts, there was a notable balance in their offensive strategy during the first half, with 25 rushing attempts compared to 36 passing attempts overall.
Performance of Geno Smith
In that game against the Colts, quarterback Geno Smith completed 25 out of 36 passes for 228 yards, marking his third consecutive game with multiple interceptions. Carroll highlighted the importance of not solely relying on the quarterback to lead the offense, noting the necessity of strategic playcalling.
Focus on Rushing Attack
This season, Carroll aims to establish a run-heavy offense to alleviate pressure on Smith. The Raiders recently utilized a high draft pick to select running back Ashton Jeanty, contributing to an improved rushing average of 173 yards in the last two games.
Quarterback Positioning
Despite improvements, the Raiders continue to depend significantly on Smith, evidenced by his 85.1% of dropbacks from the shotgun position. Kelly, known for his shotgun-heavy schemes, acknowledged the need for more effective playcalling to enhance Smith’s performance on the field.
Coaching Evolution
Kelly’s experiences have led him to adapt his coaching techniques. Previously renowned for fast-paced offenses, he successfully adjusted to a more strategic approach while at Ohio State. He noted the ongoing evolution of the game, emphasizing the importance of scoring, regardless of the methods used.
Current Stats and Future Outlook
Currently, the Raiders rank 20th in rushing yards and 30th in points scored. Despite Smith’s struggles, which include a league-high nine interceptions, Kelly praised him as a talented quarterback, expressing optimism about Smith’s development in Las Vegas.
