Joshua Eyes Fights in Ghana and Nigeria Ahead of Fury Showdown
According to Eddie Hearn, promoter for Matchroom, Anthony Joshua is contemplating fighting in Ghana and Nigeria before a highly anticipated match against Tyson Fury in 2026.
Joshua (28-4, 25 KOs), who turns 36 next week, has been inactive since suffering a knockout loss to Daniel Dubois in September 2024. Following elbow surgery, he is expected to return to the ring either later this year or early 2026.
Potential opponents include Martin Bakole and former WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder. Bakole (21-2-1, 16 KOs) is a Nigerian contender who has not won in his past two bouts, while Wilder (44-4-1, 32 KOs) recently secured only his second victory in six fights. He anticipates a fight in early 2026.
“Initially, I thought Joshua wouldn’t fight this year, but now it’s a possibility,” Hearn shared with ESPN. “When I saw him in Dubai, he was fully committed and focused. It has been a frustrating journey for him, but his desire to regain the heavyweight title is evident.”
Hearn mentioned interest from Africa for a bout, which Joshua has expressed a desire for before retiring. “Fighting in Africa would be amazing,” he noted, “but with an 18-month absence from fighting, it’s crucial to secure an intelligent comeback opponent.
Securing a long-awaited match against English rival Fury remains a top priority. Discussions between Joshua and Fury have been ongoing for five years without a resolution.
Recent talks also included Saudi Arabia’s Turki Alalshikh, noted for orchestrating major fights. Hearn remarked, “Joshua has shown unprecedented eagerness to fight Fury, aiming not only for the match but to secure a victory. With rising tensions in the heavyweight division, it’s crucial to establish momentum before that big fight.”
