Stars to Compete in Charity Golf Tournament
Major League Baseball has announced the Capital One MLB Open, a new golf tournament showcasing both current and former MLB players. This event will take place at the prestigious Shadow Creek course, owned by MGM Resorts International, during MLB Awards Week from November 12-14.
Sixty Major League participants from all 30 teams are set to compete, including notable players like Jimmy Rollins, Tarik Skubal, John Smoltz, Justin Turner, and David Wright. Mookie Betts will add commentary as a correspondent on the course. The tournament will be televised on TNT on November 18, with the highlights also airing on MLB Network on November 20. A complete list of participants will be revealed later, and many players will also attend the MLB Awards at The Chelsea, Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, on November 13.
Noah Garden, MLB Deputy Commissioner, Business & Media, expressed enthusiasm for the event: “For years we’ve aimed to deliver a unique offseason golf experience for players and fans. Thanks to key partners like Capital One, MGM Resorts, and TNT Sports, we’re excited to unveil this competitive event in a remarkable setting.”
The three-day event begins with a pro-am, pairing MLB stars with amateur players for a memorable experience. The main tournament will feature a unique team format, with current and former players competing in a gross best-ball format. A special scoring system will allow players to accumulate points on each hole, fostering competition among the teams. The winning team will choose a charity to receive a monetary donation.
Byron Daub, Vice President of Brand Sponsorships at Capital One, remarked on the partnership: “We’re thrilled to collaborate with Major League Baseball for the inaugural Capital One MLB Open. Our cardholders will enjoy VIP access and exclusive opportunities to play Shadow Creek with MLB legends during the Pro-Am.”
Besides the TNT recap, further coverage will be provided by Bleacher Report, MLB Network, and @MLB. PGA Tour Productions will handle the television production, supported by MLB Network, with Mike Milthorpe of Milthorpe Sports serving as Tournament Director. The event will be produced by Mike Flaskey Entertainment.
The Capital One MLB Open is a highlight of MLB Awards Week, coinciding with the live MLB Awards show presented by MGM Rewards from The Chelsea at The Cosmopolitan on November 13. This year, Betts will co-host the awards show for the first time alongside noted comedian and baseball enthusiast, Roy Wood Jr.
During the awards, various accolades will be announced, including winners of the Hank Aaron Award, Comeback Players of the Year, and the Capital One Premier Play of the Year. Fans can anticipate exciting performances and surprises unique to MLB.
