Peter Schrager, an ESPN NFL analyst, previously with NFL Network and Fox, shares insights in a Q&A with Post columnist Steve Serby.
Why Listen to “The Schrager Hour”?
My podcast offers a relaxed atmosphere where I engage with various football personalities—coaches, GMs, former players, and notable fans. My aim is to present a unique side of them that’s rarely showcased, encouraging guests to share untold stories in a casual setting. I want listeners to feel like they’re part of an enjoyable dinner conversation. Notable guests have included Eli Manning and Al Michaels, showcasing authentic versions of these figures.
Podcast and TV Style
My on-air persona mirrors who I am off the screen. I didn’t attend a major broadcasting school or undergo formal media training, which I believe allows for a genuine representation of my love for football and storytelling. I maintain enthusiasm and strive to make football enjoyable rather than overly formal or corporate.
Admired Broadcasters
Al Michaels, Troy Aikman, and Ian Eagle are broadcasters I hold in high regard for their candidness. Additionally, writers like Bill Simmons and Peter King have influenced my writing style early in my career, alongside “Mike and the Mad Dog” for their unfiltered discussions.
Favorite Guests and Interviews
Sean Payton is a fantastic storyteller, often taking our conversations in unexpected and delightful directions. I also have a great rapport with Sean McVay and enjoy my discussions with Kevin Burkhardt, which are both enlightening and entertaining.
Memorable NFL Experiences
Being a sideline reporter for “Monday Night Football” is a tremendous honor filled with history and excitement. A standout memory is the pivotal [2012] NFC Championship game, where Eli Manning showcased incredible resilience in harsh conditions. It’s a performance I would have loved to report on.
Future Prospects and Final Thoughts
As for the current NFL season, I’m sticking with my preseason Super Bowl prediction of Bills vs. Eagles, leaning towards the Bills as champions due to their preparation and drive. I’m constantly inspired by the journey it took to reach this point in my career, and I hope to serve as an example for others chasing their dreams.
