Abedellah Shelbayh: The ATP player hailed as ‘special’ by Rafael Nadal
The player in question is Abedellah Shelbayh, commonly referred to as Abdullah, an ATP talent who caught the eye of Toni Nadal.
Born in Jordan, Shelbayh switched to left-handed play to mirror his idol, Rafael Nadal. At the age of 14, he moved to Mallorca to join the Rafa Nadal Academy after impressing Toni Nadal during a visit to Jordan.
Three years later, he graduated from the academy and turned professional at the end of the 2022 season. In 2023, after showcasing his skills, he earned a wildcard entry into the Next Gen ATP Finals, featuring the year’s top young players.
Nadal acknowledged Shelbayh’s unique talent, noting in a statement, “To understand Abdullah, you must assess his skill. He displays innate ability, capable of executing moves that most players cannot. His playing style unsettles opponents,” after practicing with him.
Although he only won one of three matches at the Next Gen ATP Finals, defeating rising American star Alex Michelsen, it marked a significant season for him.
Abedellah Shelbayh’s Historic Achievements for Jordan
Jordan has a limited tennis background, and Shelbayh made history before even graduating from the Rafa Nadal Academy. In 2020, at just 16, he became the first Jordanian to achieve an ATP ranking.
His accomplishments continued the following year when he reached the Wimbledon junior doubles final with Daniel Rincon. In 2022, he became the first Jordanian to win a match on the ATP Challenger Tour, and in 2023, he made his main ATP Tour debut, securing his first match victory in a clay tournament in Banja Luka, Bosnia.
His success included a title win at a Challenger tournament in Charleston, elevating him to a career-high ATP ranking of 181 in January 2024. Despite earlier struggles, which saw him slide out of the top 400, he has recently regained form, winning 10 of his last 12 matches, including a second ATP Challenger title in Las Vegas.
Shelbayh aims to build on this momentum and return to Grand Slam qualifying next year, as he still seeks his first main draw entry in a major tournament.
