iOS 26 was launched last month, and the developments keep coming with the ongoing beta testing of iOS 26.1. This update expands the availability of Apple Intelligence and Live Translation for compatible AirPods to more languages and introduces a few minor adjustments in Apple Music, Calendar, Photos, Clock, and Safari apps across the board.
Upcoming Features and Enhancements
Future updates will bring even more features and improvements, spanning the subsequent iOS 26.1 beta iterations up to iOS 26.4. What’s currently known is just the tip of the iceberg; many more functionalities are anticipated in the coming year.
Digital Passport
iOS 26 will enable users to incorporate a digital version of their U.S. passport into the Apple Wallet app. Set to roll out later this year, this feature was initially linked to a software update, but recent updates suggest it might be activated through a server-side modification. The Digital ID can be presented at TSA checkpoints for identity verification, although it is not a substitute for a physical passport and cannot facilitate international travel. Apple emphasizes that this feature will be secure, private, and in line with REAL ID standards.
RCS Enhancements
Previously, Apple announced plans to integrate end-to-end encrypted RCS messaging into Messages in future software updates. While users are still waiting for this rollout, Apple plans to introduce several new functionalities once RCS Universal Profile 3.0 support is in place. Key new capabilities are expected to include end-to-end encryption, inline replies, message editing, unsending messages, and complete Tapback support for RCS messaging.
Personalized Siri
In late July, Apple CEO Tim Cook noted positive progress on a more personalized version of Siri, with plans outlined to launch features by next year. It is anticipated that the updated Siri will debut in the U.S. in spring 2026. Features will include enhanced understanding of user context and app-specific controls, enabling Siri to assist with tasks like checking flight details and lunch reservations.
Weather via Satellite
Recent updates hint at the possibility of a “Weather via satellite” feature in iOS 26; however, it hasn’t been officially confirmed or released. This capability would allow users to access weather information in areas without Wi-Fi or cellular service. Currently, Apple provides a suite of satellite features without fees, recently extending free access for existing iPhone 14 and iPhone 15 users for another year.
New Emoji
With the expected launch of iOS 26.4, new emoji will likely be introduced, celebrating World Emoji Day with fresh characters from Unicode 17.0. Some anticipated new emoji include a trombone, treasure chest, distorted face, hairy creature, fight cloud, apple core, orca, ballet dancers, and landslide. Notably, the distorted face emoji has gained popularity in online communities.
