England’s T20 World Cup Preparations in Auckland
England’s preparations for the upcoming T20 World Cup in India, set for February, took place in Auckland on Wednesday, where they had to conduct their final training session indoors due to cool, drizzly weather. While the necessity of these bilateral series can sometimes be unclear, for at least one player, the situation is quite different.
Tom Banton’s New Role
Tom Banton expressed that he is “still learning now.” Although this statement is often echoed by seasoned players, Banton’s situation is particularly true to his experience. After building his reputation primarily as a top-order batter, he is now adapting to a new role coming in at positions five or six. He mentioned, “There weren’t really too many conversations; I just got brought back into the team and told: ‘You’re going to bat in the middle order now.’”
Adjusting to Middle Order Challenges
Before his return in June, Banton had played 87% of his 163 senior T20 innings as an opener. The remaining matches featured him batting mostly at No 3, with very few opportunities at other positions. He believes that mastering the middle order is significantly more challenging than opening, saying, “Batting in the middle order is a lot harder than opening.”
Mixed Performances in New Zealand
Banton reflected on his performances in New Zealand, noting that “there’s going to be times where it comes off and it looks great and other times where it doesn’t.” His first two matches this series showcased these fluctuations; he scored nine runs in the first game and 29 runs in the second, finishing unbeaten.
Reflecting on His Journey
Banton returned to New Zealand, where he made his international debut in November 2019. After facing a three-year stretch away from the team, his recent recall for Harry Brook’s first T20 as captain was significant. He remarked on his journey, acknowledging the challenges and growth he experienced during his absence from the squad.
Support from Coaching Staff
Grateful for this second chance, Banton appreciates the support from head coach Brendon McCullum, who encouraged him to “express yourself.” This kind of backing provides him with the confidence to take risks without fearing immediate failure.
Upcoming Matches and Squad Changes
After two games in Christchurch at Hagley Park, England is set to play the series finale at Eden Park, where they will reassess their lineup due to uncertain weather and unfamiliarity with the venue. Following this series, they will shift focus to ODIs, bringing in Jofra Archer and other players as part of an adjusted squad.
