Return of “The Witcher” for Season 4
Based on Andrzej Sapkowski’s acclaimed book series and adapted for television by Lauren Schmidt Hissrich, “The Witcher” has launched its fourth and second-to-last season on Netflix. In this season, Liam Hemsworth takes over the role of Geralt of Rivia from Henry Cavill, who exited the show after Season 3 in 2022, coinciding with Hemsworth’s casting announcement. Season 4 delivers a sharper narrative than its predecessor, filled with thrilling action and both familiar and new characters, effectively resetting the series by clarifying longstanding plot complexities.
Opening Sequence and Character Development
The season kicks off with an elderly man recounting the tale of The Butcher of Blaviken to a group of children, setting the stage for the current timeline a century after earlier events. This recap reestablishes the saga’s foundations. Geralt, separated from Yennefer (Anya Chalotra) and Ciri (Freya Allan), is severely wounded and embarks on a quest with his friend, Jaskier the bard (Joey Batey), and the legendary archer Milva (Meng’er Zhang) to find Ciri before she falls into the hands of the malevolent mage Vilgefortz (Mahesh Jadu) or Emhyr (Bart Edwards), the Nilfgaardian emperor. Along the way, Geralt forms alliances with characters from “Witcher” lore known as the Hanza.
Ciri’s Journey of Self-Discovery
Now in her twenties, Ciri grapples with her identity stemming from her powerful Elder blood and Nilfgaard lineage, which have made her a target. She adopts the identity of Falka and joins a group of thieves called the Rats. Striving to forge her own path away from her parents’ shadows, Ciri struggles with the moral dilemmas presented by her new surroundings. Without guidance from Geralt and Yennefer, she chooses to craft her own destiny, only to find that her past continues to haunt her.
Transitioning to a New Lead
Fans have been curious about how Hemsworth would embody a role that Cavill has made his own. While the characters’ voices differ, the straightforward narrative structure of this season, which focuses on Geralt, Yennefer, and Ciri individually, allows for a smooth transition. Additionally, as Geralt becomes more connected to his emotions, this shift in portrayal between the actors feels all the more justified according to the character’s development in the story.
Dynamic Action and New Characters
The season is rich in beautifully shot action scenes infused with magic, sword fights, and thrilling monster encounters. It also introduces memorable new characters like Regis (Laurence Fishburne), a mysterious herbalist who assists Geralt and his companions, and Zoltan (Danny Woodburn), a beloved dwarf with remarkable skills, among others, contributing to the already vibrant ensemble.
Season 4: A Strong Foundation for the Future
Even with a new lead, Season 4 of “The Witcher” has largely recaptured its enchanting essence. While Episode 5, “The Joy of Cooking,” feels more like filler, the remainder of the season maintains good pacing and delivers a well-balanced narrative with ample focus on the main trio. This season sets the stage for the fifth and final installment of this richly woven medieval saga, making it an essential precursor to the conclusion. Although “The Witcher” nears its end, this season portrays both an ending and a new beginning.
