Opening the Idaho Falls Boxing Club
On July 1, Edgar Chavez and I launched the Idaho Falls Boxing Club. This marked a significant risk for two individuals inexperienced in gym management, yet we found reassurance in having one of boxing’s finest enthusiasts, Narcisco “Nars” Martinez, as our ally. A former coach for the U.S. Army, Navy, and USA Boxing, Nars had relocated to Idaho Falls with his wife, Dorothy, to be near family.
Legends and Memories
Nars’ connections included some of boxing’s most renowned figures, such as former world champions and Olympians like Michael Nunn, Sindy Amador, and the famous referee Tony Weeks, among others. In our gym, a world title belt once belonging to Junior Jones is displayed behind glass, alongside boxing gloves autographed by Muhammad Ali. These items were gifts from Nars, but what truly mattered was the invaluable guidance he provided.
His Influence and Legacy
Nars was a source of encouragement for Edgar and me, always willing to share his wisdom and answer our inquiries. His passing last month left a void in the boxing community, as we lost a Hall of Fame coach who overcame poverty, served in Vietnam, and left a significant impact on the sport he cherished.
Inspiring the Next Generation
What stands out most to us is Nars’ commitment to our young athletes. Despite his declining health, he beamed with joy whenever our boxers visited him in the hospital. Edgar’s sons, Remmy and E.J., my son Owen, talented boxer Mabel Ornelas, and others all benefitted from Nars’ mentorship during his final weeks.
A Selfless Teacher
Before the opening of our gym, Nars frequently visited Edgar’s home, sharing his knowledge with kids training in the garage. His humility shone through as he sought no recognition, focused exclusively on teaching and nurturing the next generation of boxers. He made a profound impact, often sitting quietly as he offered advice.
Continued Guidance
Even during his health struggles, Nars played an essential role in our endeavors at the Idaho Falls Boxing Club. He inspired us to emphasize fundamental skills, create a safe environment for kids, and instill respect for boxing traditions. Just days before his passing, he remained engaged, advising Owen during a major tournament.
Honoring Nars’ Memory
As we strive to grow the gym, we aim to uphold Nars’ values by establishing a strong reputation for training grounded in fundamentals, respect, and integrity. Nars’ passion for boxing and dedication to those involved in it will continue to shape every aspect of our club, turning workouts and practices into a tribute to his legacy. Nars touched countless lives, and we will forever remember him.
