Apple’s 2027 iPhone Features Hidden Front Camera
A Chinese source revealed that Apple’s 2027 iPhone will have its front camera hidden beneath the screen, supporting rumors that this model, marking the 20th anniversary of the iPhone, will not display any visible cutouts on the screen.
According to Digital Chat Station, an account on Weibo, Apple is making significant progress in developing under-screen camera technology, aimed for implementation in 2027, following the anticipated debut of under-screen Face ID on the iPhone 18 Pro next year.
While several Android smartphones currently incorporate under-display selfie cameras, the quality of the images tends to be compromised due to the underlying display layers. Apple has likely delayed this feature for similar reasons, but it has been reportedly working on its proprietary solution, potentially launching in its first foldable iPhone next year.
A report from April 2024 indicated that LG Innotek, one of Apple’s Korean suppliers, is creating under-display cameras that do not showcase any holes when inactive. These systems utilize a “freeform optic” array of multiple lenses designed to minimize distortion and enhance brightness, compensating for the light loss that generally occurs when a camera is placed behind a screen.
It remains unclear if LG Innotek’s technology will be featured in the upcoming foldable iPhone. Nonetheless, JP Morgan recently announced that Apple’s first foldable device is set to include an industry-leading 24-megapixel camera beneath the inner display, a significant advancement compared to the 4 or 8-megapixel cameras commonly found in other models.
Apple is also rumored to be working on a significant redesign for the 20th anniversary iPhone, possibly resulting in a completely bezel-less display that wraps around all four edges. There is substantial speculation that the company may skip the “iPhone 19” label, similar to how it launched the iPhone X during the 10th anniversary in 2017, bypassing the iPhone 9.
