The Detroit Lions returned to Ford Field just one week after their divisional loss on Thanksgiving Day, this time ready to face the in-form Dallas Cowboys.
The Lions showcased a balanced performance, with significant contributions from offense, defense, and special teams. Jared Goff exceeded 300 passing yards, the Lions excelled in turnovers with two interceptions and a fumble recovery, and Jahmyr Gibbs scored three rushing touchdowns. If I were Dan Campbell, almost every player would deserve a game ball for their outstanding efforts against Dallas.
However, if one player were to be recognized, it would have to be an often-overlooked member of the Lions’ defense.
Player of the Game: Al-Quadin Muhammad
Although Muhammad did not start this game, he made significant contributions that were crucial in securing the victory.
Joining the Lions in October of the 2024 season, after being released by the Cowboys, Muhammad stepped up as a fill-in starter due to injuries and impressed enough to earn a second contract. This season, he has kept up his momentum, entering this game with six sacks across 12 games. Even as a rotational pass-rusher, he played a crucial role, especially against his former team, recording three sacks on Dak Prescott.
His first sack occurred five minutes into the second quarter, halting a Dallas drive that had advanced 55 yards over 14 plays. At the Lions’ 15-yard line, Prescott attempted a pass, but two seconds later found himself on the ground, thanks to Muhammad’s quick beat of reserve left tackle Nate Thomas.
Muhammad’s second sack, halfway through the fourth quarter, resulted from a team effort where Tyleik Williams overwhelmed the left guard, forcing Prescott to scramble. The pressure allowed Muhammad to capitalize on a clear path to sack the quarterback.
His final sack came during a critical moment, just before the game’s end. With Dallas trying to mount a comeback down by 14 points, Muhammad showcased his skill by once again getting past the right tackle, leading to an interception on the next play that sealed the victory.
Muhammad’s performance likely earned him a larger role in the future. Not only did he help secure a win, but he also registered personal bests for both game and season sack totals against the Cowboys.
Honorable Mention: Tom Kennedy
Even though he ranks as the fourth-longest tenured player on the Detroit Lions, wide receiver Tom Kennedy remains relatively unknown. After going undrafted in 2019, Kennedy, a former professional lacrosse player, has switched between the practice squad and active roster.
This season, he finally got a chance to play regularly, stepping up as Detroit’s kick and punt returner due to Kalif Raymond’s injury. He has maximized this opportunity effectively.
Kennedy returned three kickoffs for a total of 120 yards in this game, including a longest return of 42 yards. While not the fastest player, his agility and vision helped him navigate lanes effectively. Consequently, Detroit started their subsequent drives at advantageous positions after his returns.
Additionally, he recorded a 21-yard punt return in the second quarter, paving the way for a successful touchdown drive for the Lions.
Kennedy’s longevity on the team over seven seasons and two coaching changes highlights his dedication and work ethic. His consistent performance during training camps and preseason games has finally allowed him to shine in significant moments for Detroit.
