Boston Red Sox
The Red Sox have additional needs to fulfill in the field and bullpen this offseason following trades for two starting pitchers.
As the Winter Meetings approach, rumors surrounding the Red Sox have centered on players like Alex Bregman, Kyle Schwarber, and Pete Alonso, with Bo Bichette also emerging as a potential target as Boston aims to enhance their lineup.
Despite the potential addition of one of these hitters, the Red Sox will need to address further gaps as Chief Baseball Officer Craig Breslow continues to refine the roster. Breslow has already taken action by trading for two starting pitchers recently.
However, there are still crucial areas to improve in both the field and bullpen. With this in mind, here are five lesser-discussed free agents the Red Sox might consider pursuing.
1B Rhys Hoskins
If the Red Sox have confidence in Triston Casas’s ability to regularly play first base, Hoskins could provide support to ease Casas’s workload. Hoskins, a right-handed hitter, had an adequate 2025 season, batting .237 with a .748 OPS and 12 home runs with the Brewers, though he only appeared in 90 games due to a thumb injury.
OF Harrison Bader
This option may hinge on how the Red Sox choose to handle their crowded outfield and whether they trade Jarren Duran, Wilyer Abreu, or both. Even with their surplus, Boston could benefit from acquiring a right-handed outfield bat, particularly if they retain one of Duran or Abreu.
INF Ha-Seong Kim
If the Red Sox lose Bregman in free agency, they will need to reassess their middle infield, with Marcelo Mayer likely stepping in at third base. In such a scenario, Kim could be a leading candidate for second base, coming off a disappointing year but showing potential from prior seasons.
LHP Taylor Rogers
The bullpen is in need of left-handers, particularly after trading Brennan Bernardino. The lack of standout lefty options in free agency means Breslow may need to be strategic in securing a reliable left-handed reliever. Rogers stands out as one of the best remaining left-handed options, equipped to strike out batters consistently.
