Australia Announces Squad for Third Ashes Test
Australia has revealed a 15-player squad for the upcoming third Ashes Test against England in Adelaide, marking a significant boost with the return of captain Pat Cummins.
Cummins has been dealing with lumbar back stress for several months. He was close to being selected for last week’s day-night Test at the Gabba, but selectors chose to prioritize his health, opting not to rush his return.
On Wednesday, Cricket Australia confirmed Cummins’ much-anticipated return for the Adelaide Test scheduled to commence on December 17. This marks the only change from the squad that played in the second Test in Brisbane.
Australia’s coach, Andrew McDonald, commented on Cummins’ preparedness, stating, “We believe he’ll be as well-prepared as possible. He surpassed our expectations in recovery, generating serious discussion around his potential selection for Brisbane.” He added that barring unforeseen circumstances, Cummins is expected to lead the team in Adelaide.
Cummins’ return puts fellow seamers Michael Neser and Brendan Doggett at risk of losing their spots in the starting lineup. Additionally, veteran spinner Nathan Lyon is assured a place in the team following his unexpected exclusion from the previous match.
In related news, West Australian pacer Jhye Richardson will join the Test squad as part of his rehab program, hinting at a possible selection later in the series. The 29-year-old has recently come off a ten-month rehabilitation following shoulder surgery and has performed well in recent matches.
Despite discussions about his place, veteran opener Usman Khawaja has retained his position in the squad. McDonald expressed confidence in Khawaja’s fitness and highlighted the team’s flexibility in adjusting their batting order based on conditions and opponent strategies.
