The Milwaukee Brewers have had a relatively quiet offseason so far. Here’s a brief overview of the key transactions they’ve made:
-
11/2: RHP Shelby Miller, LHP Jordan Montgomery, and RHP Erick Fedde opted for free agency.
-
11/3: Milwaukee declined the mutual option for C Danny Jansen, making him a free agent.
-
11/3: RHP Coleman Crow was added to the 40-man roster.
-
11/4: 1B Rhys Hoskins and LHP Jose Quintana had their mutual options declined by Milwaukee and are now free agents.
-
11/18: RHP Brandon Woodruff accepted a qualifying offer.
-
12/11: OF Akil Baddoo signed a major league contract.
-
12/13: RHP Nick Mears and OF Isaac Collins were traded to the Royals for LHP Ángel Zerpa.
Considering the end-of-season 40-man roster, the Brewers have only seen five players leave (Jansen, Hoskins, Quintana, Mears, and Collins) while bringing in three new players (Crow, Baddoo, and Zerpa). Woodruff remains unchanged, and Miller, Montgomery, and Fedde had already been affected by injuries or were designated for assignment.
Pitching
Out of the 21 pitchers currently on the roster, 13 are potential starters for Milwaukee. This list includes:
- Ángel Zerpa (if rumors about him starting are valid).
It’s likely that some pitchers, such as Crow and Rodriguez, won’t make the major league team come opening day. Milwaukee may also explore trading players like Peralta to add depth to their already strong farm system.
Catcher
The Brewers currently have just two catchers on their 40-man roster: William Contreras and Jeferson Quero. Given that there’s a vacant 40-man spot, adding another catcher before the season seems probable, enabling Quero to continue his development in the minors.
Infield
There are eight infielders on Milwaukee’s 40-man roster:
- Player A
- Player B
- Player C
- Player D
- Player E
- Player F
- Player G
- Player H
It’s likely that Black and Seigler will start the season in the minors, leaving Milwaukee with six infielders on the active roster.
Outfield
With two catchers and six infielders, there’s room for five outfielders. Currently, eight are on the 40-man roster:
- Player I
- Player J
- Player K
- Player L
- Player M
- Player N
- Player O
- Player P
Chourio, Frelick, and Yelich are certain to make the roster, leaving two spots for five players. Berroa appears to be the most likely candidate to be dropped, and Lockridge may also begin the season in the minors.
Final Roster
This brings us to a projected roster of 13 pitchers and 13 position players:
- Player Q
- Player R
- Player S
- Player T
- Player U
- Player V
- Player W
- Player X
- Player Y
- Player Z
- Player AA
- Player BB
- Player CC
- Player DD
