Dan Issel’s Journey with the Nuggets
DENVER — Hall of Famer Dan Issel was a vital part of the Nuggets from 1975 to 1985 and later returned to coach the team in the 1990s.
Known for his resilience and strength, Issel earned the nickname “The Horse” during his playing career. This nickname holds special significance for him.
“I’m in the thoroughbred business,” Issel said in an interview with Denver7. “Going to the University of Kentucky, you almost have to fall in love with that industry.”
Issel believes that only a few moments in his remarkable basketball career can rival the thrill of winning a significant horse race: “Winning the ABA Championship with the Kentucky Colonels was number one, and number two was coaching the Nuggets to an upset against the No. 1 Seattle SuperSonics in the 1994 playoffs.”
Interestingly, another Nuggets legend, Nikola Jokić, also shares a passion for horses. “We’re both in the horse business,” said Issel. “He has trotters, and while they are different types of racehorses, I’m sure he experiences the same joy when he wins.”
These days, the Nuggets frequently find themselves in the winner’s circle, thanks in large part to Jokić. Issel praises him, saying, “What he does on the basketball court is unprecedented.” Recently, Jokić surpassed Issel as the second-highest scorer in Nuggets history, prompting Issel to say, “Records are meant to be broken, and he’s likely to take the top spot someday.”
Looking Toward the Future
Reflecting on the evolution of basketball, Issel noted the differences for big men today compared to his era. “Back then, big men played closer to the basket, but now they need to be able to shoot from the three-point line.”
As for the current Nuggets team, Issel believes they are stronger and deeper than last year’s. He expressed confidence that if they remain healthy, they have a solid chance to win an NBA championship. He emphasized to the team the importance of prioritizing winning over individual accolades.
Issel also advises Nuggets fans to cherish the team’s current success. “Enjoy this moment,” he urged. “I’ve been around during tough seasons, and this is a time to celebrate.”
Exciting Times Ahead
This Christmas Day, the Nuggets will host the Timberwolves at 8:30 p.m. at Ball Arena. Fans can catch part of the game on The Spot Denver 3 and switch to Denver7 to watch the conclusion after the Broncos-Chiefs game.
Issel commented on the significance of Christmas Day games, stating that during his playing days, it wasn’t a major event. “Back then, Christmas Day games weren’t common,” he said. “Now, it feels like the unofficial start of the NBA season, which is quite exciting.”
