Introduction
Ding Miao, a 33-year-old graduate of the Central Academy of Fine Arts in China, is known for her adventurous life choices. After leaving the art world nearly ten years ago, she embarked on a professional career in mixed martial arts (MMA). This summer, she made headlines as the first Chinese woman to sign with the slap fighting promotion, Power Slap, based in the U.S.
What is Slap Fighting?
Slap fighting, a combat sport that began in Russia, gained international fame thanks to Dana White, the CEO of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). In this sport, two competitors take turns slapping each other, with no dodging or blocking allowed, making it a uniquely intense challenge.
Ding’s Introduction to Slap Fighting
Ding first became aware of slap fighting in 2022 during a Russian competition, which she felt was more of a spectacle than a serious contest, with participants dressed up and not delivering strong hits. Intrigued, she later became inspired to join after seeing former training partners compete in the revamped rules of Power Slap in 2023.
First Competition Experience
Her debut in slap fighting brought back feelings of excitement she hadn’t experienced in some time. The event’s atmosphere was electric, fueled by UFC’s backing. Having trained extensively to withstand slaps, she entered the ring ready and confident, even smiling after her first hit, as it wasn’t as painful as she anticipated.
Understanding the Rules
Matches consist of three turns for each fighter, who must declare which hand they’ll use to strike. Victories can be achieved through knockouts or scoring, with judges assessing factors such as the effectiveness of strikes and any penalties for fouls.
Health Risks and Family Support
Ding contemplated the risks of slap fighting, particularly given her history of injuries from MMA. Encouraged by her supportive doctor, she decided to participate, fully aware of the implications of her past injuries. While her parents are concerned about her choices, they have come to accept her unorthodox career path, having seen her resilience in navigating various life changes.
Goals and Future Aspirations
While Ding doesn’t have specific ambitions within Power Slap, she intends to resume her MMA career after completing her six matches. Significantly, she wishes to honor traditional MMA practices when she retires, emphasizing the importance of this ritual as a meaningful conclusion to her athletic journey.
