Coach Andrew McDonald Hints at Minimal Changes for Final Ashes Test
Australian head coach Andrew McDonald suggested that there won’t be significant alterations to the starting XI for the fifth Ashes Test in Sydney, confirming spots for experienced batter Usman Khawaja and fast bowler Mitchell Starc.
Having already secured the Ashes urn after three victories, Australia suffered a four-wicket loss in the fourth Test in Melbourne, allowing England to claim its first win on Australian soil in nearly 15 years.
In addressing the media at the MCG, McDonald warned against making drastic lineup changes for the upcoming match in Sydney, particularly amidst a busy schedule for 2026/27. Despite the series being effectively over, he highlighted the importance of World Test Championship points still at stake.
“The World Test Championship is a key focus for us,” McDonald stated, emphasizing that every Test match remains crucial. He relayed the value of consistency and the team’s recent performance, noting their strong showing with six wins in seven matches during the current cycle.
Although Khawaja’s form has declined recently, with a 21.23 average since June’s WTC final, McDonald assured that the 39-year-old would retain his place: “His performance this year has warranted his selection,” he added.
Starc, barring any last-minute issues, is also set to play, which would mark his 27th consecutive Test. McDonald expressed optimism that Starc can sustain this streak despite the demanding schedule ahead.
While discussing the potential return of spinner Todd Murphy, sidelined for the Boxing Day Test, McDonald reiterated the unusual nature of that decision. He also suggested that all-rounder Beau Webster could replace Cameron Green, who has recently struggled with form.
The final Ashes Test between Australia and England is scheduled to begin at the SCG on January 4.
