Dr. Gregory McCord Publishes Two Books
(WPDE) — Dr. Gregory McCord has authored two books: “Augusta Municipal Golf Course: The Patch” and “The Cabbage Patch Kid.”
Experience in Education
With nearly 30 years of experience in education, McCord has held various roles including teacher, assistant principal, principal, assistant superintendent, and superintendent. He feels a strong desire to continue motivating and inspiring children.
Joy in Helping Others
“It was important for me to do something more than what I was doing; I’ve been enjoying myself in the semi-retired life. I’ve had some opportunities to explore different avenues of work in Florence One Schools. And part of that has been around elementary-age students. And I can’t tell you how much joy it brings me to be around elementary students, but also knowing that there are some ways that I can contribute to helping make sure that our kids are getting the type of conversations that they need to be successful in life. And so, I thought about how I can best do that. And writing a book has given me another chance to be involved in young people’s lives.”
Inspiration from Personal Experiences
“The Cabbage Patch Kid” narrates the true story of McCord’s upbringing in Augusta, Georgia. He found his purpose and discipline on the municipal golf course known as “The Patch.” Raised by a loving single mother, he learned valuable lessons about hard work and perseverance.
A Journey Against the Odds
Despite growing up in 14 different government-assisted housing developments, McCord defied expectations by earning a golf scholarship. He attributes much of his success to the supportive community at The Patch.
Mentorship and Community Impact
“I think about what helped change me and helped change the trajectory of life for me. And that’s the game of golf. Now, when you talk about golf with someone who looks like me it’s kind of unseen and unheard. This is something that’s available. And so having a chance to tell my story and share it with young people gives them exposure that may inspire them to pursue similar paths.”
Future Events and Signings
McCord plans to host a book signing at Lil Jazzi’s Cafe next Saturday, January 10, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. He is also collaborating with Golf Pro Mike Porter to organize golfing events for local youth, aiming to inspire and serve the community.
