Cleveland Cavaliers Begin 2026 with a Win
CLEVELAND, Ohio — A new year brings fresh hopes for the Cavaliers.
Despite some doubts from fans, Cleveland kicked off 2026 with a victory, edging the short-handed Denver Nuggets 113-108. This marks the Cavaliers’ third consecutive win.
Coach’s Reflection on the Game
“You could say we stole that one,” reflected Cavs coach Kenny Atkinson after the game. “They played better overall, but it demonstrates our grit and resilience. A few weeks ago, we might not have won this match. We’re in a stronger place, both spiritually and as a team,” he added. “Winning is what matters, but this game won’t go down in history.”
Game Dynamics
The Cavaliers entered this matchup favored by 13.5 points against a depleted Nuggets squad missing four starters: Aaron Gordon, Christian Braun, Cameron Johnson, and MVP candidate Nikola Jokic.
Contrary to expectations, the game was competitive, featuring seven lead changes and five ties, with both teams controlling the lead for parts of the game.
Shifting Momentum
After leading by three at halftime, the Nuggets launched a 17-3 run at the start of the third quarter, taking an 11-point lead, the largest of the night. However, the Cavs countered with a 13-3 rally, narrowing the gap before briefly claiming the lead again.
Fourth Quarter Comeback
The fourth quarter saw a rejuvenated Cavs team as they went on a 7-0 run, highlighted by a spectacular two-handed dunk from Donovan Mitchell. It wasn’t until 2:13 left that Cleveland regained the lead with a crucial three-pointer from Darius Garland.
Cleveland dominated the final quarter, outscoring Denver 25-11. The Nuggets struggled, hitting only 4 of 20 shots from the field.
Players’ Performance
Mitchell led the Cavaliers with 33 points, alongside six rebounds and five assists. Garland contributed 18 points and eight assists, while De’Andre Hunter added 16 off the bench. The Cavs played without starter Dean Wade and reserve Sam Merrill.
Avoiding Another Upset
Notably, the Cavs have suffered shocking losses to underdog teams earlier this season. On this night, it seemed Denver could join that list. Yet, Cleveland managed to hold on for the win — not without difficulty, but ultimately celebrating a well-earned victory to kick off the year.
Upcoming Game
The Cavs will face the top-seeded Detroit Pistons at home on Sunday, with the game scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
