That time of year has arrived once again. Recently, a wave of coaching talent has become available.
The Atlanta Falcons dismissed Raheem Morris, the Cleveland Browns parted ways with Kevin Stefanski, the Las Vegas Raiders moved on from Pete Carroll, and the Arizona Cardinals let go of Jonathan Gannon. Additionally, the Baltimore Ravens released John Harbaugh after 18 seasons.
These changes follow the in-season firings of New York Giants coach Brian Daboll and Tennessee Titans coach Brian Callahan.
Who are the top candidates for the vacant NFL head-coaching positions? While my list might differ from others reporting prominent names like Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy and Bills OC Joe Brady, here are my nine favorites.
[ Ranking the 7 NFL Head Coaching Vacancies ]
9. Commanders former offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury
Kingsbury has experience as both an NFL and college head coach, but his initial stint with the Cardinals (2019-2022) resulted in a record of 28-37-1. Last season was challenging for him in Washington due to injuries to Commanders QB Jayden Daniels.
Nevertheless, at 46, Kingsbury is regarded as a knowledgeable offensive strategist — a quality that remains in high demand.
8. Broncos defensive coordinator Vance Joseph
It’s noteworthy that Denver’s current defensive coordinator was once their head coach as recently as 2018. Joseph, 53, may not be the most exciting candidate due to his 11-21 record during his time as a head coach.
However, Joseph has consistently demonstrated skill in managing strong defenses, which is how he earned his initial shot at a head coaching role. He should be patient for the right opportunity.
