Chelsea’s chances of securing their seventh consecutive WSL title are in jeopardy following a decisive second-half performance from Arsenal, resulting in a 2-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge.
After their unbeaten 34-game league streak was halted by Everton last month, Chelsea’s second loss in four matches presents Manchester City with an opportunity to extend their lead to nine points when they face London City Lionesses on Sunday, live on Sky Sports.
Despite the daunting odds, Chelsea’s head coach, Sonia Bompastor, remains optimistic about her team’s title bid. “If City wins tomorrow, it would complicate things; a nine-point gap is substantial,” she noted. “We must keep working hard and focus on what we control to apply pressure on Man City while also safeguarding our second position. With nine games left, we have a tough road ahead, but that’s what we need to tackle.”
Arsenal earned their first win at Chelsea in eight years, with the home side struggling until the late introduction of Lauren James. Though they generated seven corners and had opportunities on the wings, they managed only one shot on target in the first half, where both teams displayed poor finishing.
Arsenal nearly capitalized early on when Katie McCabe’s shot deflected to Stina Blackstenius, who hesitated and ultimately missed a clear opportunity. The game shifted nine minutes into the second half when Mead exploited an Arsenal overload to score, giving them a vital lead. With about an hour played, Mariona Caldentey doubled the score with a shot from the edge of the box, leaving Chelsea’s goalkeeper, Hannah Hampton, stranded.
Chelsea had a chance to lessen the deficit in the final 15 minutes when Erin Cuthbert missed a free header from James’ cross. Despite continued efforts to stage a comeback, Chelsea’s finishing failed them, likely signaling the end of their WSL title aspirations.
Arsenal’s Triumph and Manchester City’s Advantage
Sky Sports’ Ron Walker at Stamford Bridge:
While Arsenal deserved their victory, the real winner was Manchester City, who could seize a firm grip on the WSL trophy with a win against London City Lionesses. Chelsea’s unforced errors contributed to their downfall, as they suffered another discouraging defeat that could put them three wins behind the leaders.
Coaches’ Perspectives
Arsenal’s head coach, Renee Slegers, praised her team’s clarity and focus, stating, “This team rises to the occasion when it matters most. Our strength today lay in our decision-making and game management, especially during the second half.”
Conversely, Chelsea’s Bompastor acknowledged her team’s shortcomings. “We had a game plan, but defensively we allowed Arsenal too much space and failed to be aggressive enough. The responsibility falls on me to ensure the players understand their roles,” she clarified.
