Sabalenka Advances in Australian Open
MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — TikTok influencer and top-seed Aryna Sabalenka is navigating through emerging teenage talent as she aims for her third Australian Open title in four years.
Facing Rising Stars
Sabalenka, celebrated for her social media insights on and off the court, defeated 19-year-old Vicky Mboko with a score of 6-1, 7-6 (1) at Rod Laver Arena on Sunday. Her next match will be against 18-year-old Iva Jovic in the quarterfinals.
Jovic’s Breakthrough
The 29-seeded Jovic dominated Yulia Putintseva, winning 6-0, 6-1 in just 53 minutes, marking her first appearance in the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam. “She’s No. 1 for a reason, and I want to play her to measure my skills,” Jovic said.
Coco Gauff’s Consistency
Coco Gauff returns to the quarterfinals for the third consecutive year after a tough match against No. 19 Karolina Muchova, winning 6-1, 3-6, 6-3. She’ll face No. 12 Elina Svitolina, who triumphed over 18-year-old Mirra Andreeva 6-2, 6-4.
Alcaraz Seeks Grand Slam Title
No. 1-ranked Carlos Alcaraz also reached the quarterfinals for the third consecutive year, overcoming No. 19 Tommy Paul 7-6 (6), 6-4, 7-5. He aims to win at Melbourne Park, where he has yet to secure a title.
Djokovic’s Ease into Quarterfinals
In a twist, 38-year-old Djokovic received a walkover into the quarterfinals when Jakub Mensik withdrew due to an abdominal injury. Djokovic has been mentoring Jovic during the tournament.
Sabalenka’s Tiebreaker Record
Sabalenka breezed through the first set against Mboko in just 31 minutes but faced challenges in the second set, eventually dominating the tiebreaker. “It’s amazing to see such young talent,” she remarked about Mboko, who saved match points but fell short.
