AI’s Impact on the Las Vegas Casino Industry
Panelists discussed the dual role of artificial intelligence (AI) in Las Vegas casinos, highlighting its potential to threaten jobs while enhancing the integrity of sports betting. However, they agree that it won’t deter visitors from the city.
Insights from Industry Experts
During a seminar titled “Challenges and Opportunities of AI in Las Vegas,” experts from the UNLV International Gaming Institute and KPMG shared their views. Brett Abarbanel, Kasra Ghaharian, and Rick Arpin addressed concerns about maintaining sports integrity amidst scandals, including recent high-profile accusations in various leagues.
AI’s Role in Enhancing Sports Integrity
Abarbanel emphasized the importance of AI in preserving sports integrity following the legalization of sports betting in 2018. He noted that AI can analyze extensive data to detect suspicious betting patterns, although it is not yet capable of fully replacing human experts in sports integrity management.
The Transformational Potential of AI
Arpin praised AI as a “transformational technology,” comparable to the internet and smartphones, and pointed out that while it has its limitations, real results are already emerging. He believes the gaming industry must embrace AI to become more efficient and innovative.
Workforce Implications and Opportunities
Ghaharian pointed out that as game development costs decrease, AI could reshape workforce roles by taking on more mundane tasks, thus allowing human workers to focus on creativity and innovation. Abarbanel echoed this, noting significant layoffs in the video game sector, suggesting a need for adaptation in workforce training and role definitions.
Complementing Human Labor
Despite concerns about job loss, Arpin clarified that AI primarily acts as an assistant rather than a replacement. While some traditional roles might diminish, new opportunities to leverage AI for improved productivity will arise, making it essential for employees to familiarize themselves with these tools.
The Future of Las Vegas and Human Experience
Panelists agreed that the essence of Las Vegas as a social hub will endure, as people continue to seek interpersonal experiences. AI may improve operational efficiency and reduce costs, thereby attracting more visitors, but the human aspect of hospitality will remain vital. Las Vegas will adapt as needed to provide unique, engaging experiences to its guests.
