Sandro Tonali’s Future Discussed After January Transfer Approaches
Sandro Tonali might depart Newcastle during the summer transfer window due to his ambition to play in the
Champions League next season.
The Italian midfielder was reportedly unsettled during the
January transfer window and was
offered to Arsenal. His agent has since commented on his future aspirations.
Reports indicate that Tonali had piqued the interest of Arsenal’s sports director, Andrea Berta, as the January window closed.
Although Arsenal chose not to pursue the 25-year-old, his intention to consider other opportunities has stirred tensions within Newcastle.
Manager Eddie Howe addressed speculation about Tonali’s commitment ahead of a crucial Carabao Cup semi-final against
Manchester City. TN
onboard after the team’s aggregate defeat of 5-1 did not alleviate concerns.
According to
The Athletic,
Tonali’s representatives reached out to Berta regarding a potential transfer. Even though a move didn’t materialize, his agent, Giuseppe Riso, indicated that the £55million signing from AC Milan in 2023 is considering a summer exit, with clubs like Arsenal, Manchester City, Juventus, and Chelsea monitoring the situation.
Riso mentioned, “Newcastle are struggling to part ways with Sandro, as he aims to guide the team to the Champions League. We will assess our options and make decisions come summer. We need to see how the season concludes first.” He emphasized there’s no immediate preference and that it’s still early to make definitive choices.
Former player Alan Shearer has cautioned Newcastle that if they fail to secure a Champions League spot, they risk losing key players like Tonali, whose contract lasts until June 2028. The team currently stands at 11th in the
Premier League, far from qualifying positions.
