Quartararo’s Challenges with Yamaha’s V4
Fabio Quartararo was en route back to Europe when the Sepang MotoGP test was halted due to a technical malfunction that left Yamaha’s garage inactive on the second day. Fortunately, the French rider managed to complete two days of testing on the new V4 during the Shakedown and the first day of the official test, despite suffering a broken finger.
Disappointing Performance Assessment
Unfortunately, Quartararo expressed concerns about the bike’s competitiveness. Even prior to the technical difficulties that affected the M1s, the 2021 world champion felt that the latest V4 model was “super far” from its competitors.
Day One Results
On the initial day of testing, Quartararo finished in ninth place, trailing Ducati’s reigning world champion Marc Marquez by 0.851 seconds. The next best Yamaha rider, Jack Miller, placed 14th.
Feeling of Lack of Confidence
“I can’t say I’m confident because we clearly see our struggles and our lap times aren’t ideal,” Quartararo remarked before leaving Sepang. He emphasized, “All I can do is give my best and ride to the fullest, irrespective of my position.”
Technical Adjustments Needed
Having spent his entire MotoGP career on an Inline4 Yamaha, Quartararo stated that he has adapted to the V4 style. However, he believes that the Yamaha V4 still has its own challenges compared to others, mentioning issues with turning, traction, electronics, grip, and power that need addressing.
Need for More Data
Quartararo acknowledged that he hasn’t had enough track time to gauge how the Yamaha V4 stands against its rivals but noted the impressive lap times competitors achieved on the first day. “We recognize our position and know we’re significantly behind, but we must accept it and continue to work hard,” he added.
Testing Outcomes and Future Plans
Meanwhile, Yamaha resumed testing on the third day with Alex Rins clocking the fastest time for M1 riders in 14th place, 1.178 seconds slower than Alex Marquez from Gresini Ducati on the overall leaderboard. Quartararo is also expected to make his return on the V4 during the Buriram test scheduled for February 21-22.
