Padres’ Target Additions
The San Diego Padres have openly expressed their intention to seek another starting pitcher and an additional bat before the season begins. President of baseball operations A.J. Preller highlighted these objectives during Spring Training, as reported by AJ Cassavell from MLB.com.
Potential Free Agent Starters
Several free agent starters remain available who could significantly contribute, such as Zac Gallen, Lucas Giolito, Zack Littell, and Griffin Canning. However, the Padres appear to be working within tight payroll limits, potentially leading them to consider reclamation projects like Walker Buehler or Germán Márquez in free agency.
Trade Possibilities
According to Dennis Lin of The Athletic, the Padres might lean towards acquiring a starter through trade, a challenging endeavor as many teams aim to compete this season. With ongoing pitching injuries during exhibition games, the chances to replace traded starters are diminishing.
Options for Trade
There may be viable options for trading with the rebuilding Nationals, such as cheap starters Mitchell Parker or Jake Irvin, who have shown improved performance. Similarly, Andre Pallante from the Cardinals fits this mold. While unexciting, they possess minor league options and durability.
Current Rotation Overview
The Padres’ expected rotation for the season includes Nick Pivetta, Michael King, and Joe Musgrove. Right-hander Randy Vásquez, who maintained a solid 3.84 ERA, is likely to secure a spot in the rotation, especially given his recent strong performance. If a new starter is added, he could still be favored as a rotation member.
Catching Situation
While the Padres are also looking to enhance their bench with an additional bat, they appear less likely to pursue catcher upgrades. Preller indicated that the team evaluated the catching market but found no options better than their current duo of Freddy Fermin and Luis Campusano.
Preller’s Contract Status
Preller addressed his contract status, confirming he is in the final year of his deal without an extension yet. Despite ongoing discussions, he emphasized the focus remains on finalizing the roster to ensure a competitive team for the upcoming season.
