Mike Rutenberg Takes Over as Browns Defensive Coordinator
CLEVELAND, Ohio — Mike Rutenberg faces a significant challenge in stepping in for Jim Schwartz as the new defensive coordinator of the Cleveland Browns. Despite lacking previous experience in calling an NFL defense, Todd Monken is confident in Rutenberg’s abilities.
Hiring Announcement
On Monday, Monken announced the hiring of Rutenberg, who was the former defensive passing game coordinator for the Falcons. He aims to maintain the Browns’ aggressive 4-3 defensive scheme, which he is familiar with.
Selection Process
Rutenberg, 41, emerged from a group of three finalists, including linebackers coach Jason Tarver and Texans coordinator Cory Undlin. Although he was the only candidate without NFL coordinator experience, he made a strong impression on Monken during their initial video call and an extensive in-person interview.
Transition from Schwartz
Rutenberg is stepping into the role following Schwartz’s resignation on February 6. Schwartz was a candidate for the head coach position but was passed over in favor of Monken. Despite attempts to bring Schwartz back, Monken moved forward with Rutenberg’s hiring.
Continuity in Coaching Staff
All other defensive assistants, including Tarver and safeties coach Ephraim Banda, are expected to remain with the team. Rutenberg’s hiring finalizes Monken’s first set of coordinators, with Travis Switzer and Byron Storer already in position.
Impressive Track Record
Rutenberg brings 16 years of NFL experience, including recent work with the Falcons under defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich. Ulbrich praised Rutenberg’s teaching ability and knowledge of defensive strategies, indicating a bright future for him in coaching.
Defensive Legacy
Rutenberg inherits a strong Browns defense, which has excelled in various metrics under Schwartz, including total yards allowed and team sacks. With standout players like Myles Garrett and Denzel Ward, the defense is well-prepared for Rutenberg’s leadership, despite the team’s recent transition.
