Pat Spencer’s Journey from Lacrosse to Basketball
When Pat Spencer (SPS ’20) first stepped onto the court at Welsh-Ryan Arena in 2019, he was a graduate student with no prior experience in college basketball. Now a guard for the Golden State Warriors, Spencer previously gained fame as a standout lacrosse player, celebrated as one of the best in the sport’s history.
After a remarkable tenure at Loyola University Maryland, where he won the Tewaaraton Award—the top honor in lacrosse—and was the first pick in the 2019 Premier Lacrosse League Draft, Spencer made the surprising decision to turn down the opportunity to pursue a career in lacrosse. From 2016 to 2019, he dedicated himself to the Greyhounds, helping them reach the NCAA semifinals and quarterfinals during his time there. Following his draft, he envisioned a new narrative for himself in basketball.
A Love for the Game
Spencer’s affinity for basketball began long before his collegiate career. Growing up, his father Bruce Spencer, a passionate basketball coach, instilled in him a competitive spirit. Pat’s mother, Donna Spencer, also a basketball enthusiast, contributed to a household where playing the sport was a given. His father coached him until he was 11, fostering a love for the game that would remain.
In a family dedicated to sports, his two younger brothers, Cam and Will, also pursued basketball, with Cam eventually playing for the Memphis Grizzlies. The Spencer family driveway often served as an impromptu practice space for neighborhood kids, emphasizing that competition was the norm in their household.
Navigating Sports Choices
As he moved into high school, Spencer focused primarily on lacrosse and basketball. Despite being undersized for basketball as a freshman, he quickly excelled in lacrosse, gaining attention for his skills. However, as college recruiting intensified, Spencer faced difficult decisions about which sport to pursue. Ultimately, he chose lacrosse due to its promising opportunities, committing to Loyola Maryland where he quickly became a star.
From Lacrosse Star to Basketball Player
Once at Loyola, Spencer shined on the lacrosse field, setting the all-time NCAA Division I record for assists. Despite success in lacrosse, his passion for basketball drew him in. After receiving his degree, he knew he needed to pursue basketball seriously. His boldness and competitive nature resonated with Chris Collins, the head coach at Northwestern, who offered him a scholarship despite Spencer’s lack of basketball highlights.
Transitioning to the Pros
While his time at Northwestern saw mixed results—averaging 10.4 points per game and experiencing a challenging season—the foundation for his professional career was set. After going undrafted following his graduation, Spencer played in Germany before returning home to refine his skills. Over the next couple of years, he signed with the Capital City Go-Go and later the Warriors’ G League affiliate, consistently improving his game.
A Dream Realized
In February 2024, Spencer made headlines when he secured a two-way contract with the Warriors. He seized opportunities, stepping up during injuries to star players and delivering impressive performances on the court. His journey—a remarkable transformation from lacrosse standout to NBA player—highlights his dedication to competitiveness and skill. Even now, as he forges ahead, he remains driven by the goal of winning a championship, reflecting on a fulfilling journey that connects his family, hard work, and love for the game.
