PEBBLE BEACH, CALIF. (February 17, 2026) – Pebble Beach Company and Hanse Golf Course Design (HGCD) have announced their ambitious plans to redesign The Links at Spanish Bay, situated among Pebble Beach Resorts’ four championship courses. Following the final round on March 17, 2026, the comprehensive overhaul aims to enhance the golfing experience to match the legendary surrounding courses along the renowned 17-Mile Drive.
Led by Gil Hanse and Jim Wagner from HGCD, the 38-year-old Spanish Bay course will undergo a complete redesign to fully leverage its breathtaking coastal backdrop. The project intends to offer a more enjoyable, playable, and strategically challenging experience for all golfer levels, including professional players. Key planned enhancements include:
- Relocating green sites, notably the 14th and 18th holes, and introducing a new par-three hole replacing the current 13th hole.
- Expanding putting greens by approximately 40%, along with resurfacing for smoother playability and varied hole positions.
- Changing the rough around the greens to low-cut turf, offering diverse recovery options.
- Widening fairways by about 30%, repositioning fairway bunkers, and adjusting contours for a more forgiving and strategic layout.
- Redesigning and repositioning tee complexes to improve sight lines and reduce forced carries, resulting in a shorter forward tee length by approximately 500 yards, while the championship tees will extend by about 375 yards, changing the par from 72 to 71.
- Updating the cart path system for better integration with the natural landscape.
The redesign will enhance the course’s year-round maintenance and sustainability with improved drainage, irrigation systems, 12% less irrigated turf, and an increased environmental habitat area of three acres.
“This project is a dream come true for a golf course architect,” said Hanse, President and Lead Designer of HGCD. “Spanish Bay offers one of the most exceptional golf settings we’ve encountered, and we are eager to collaborate with Pebble Beach Company in creating another remarkable golfing experience on the Monterey Peninsula.”
David Stivers, CEO of Pebble Beach Company, added, “We have complete trust in the HGCD team’s ability to elevate Spanish Bay into an essential course for all golfers visiting Pebble Beach. The vision we have seen in the planning stages excites us as we anticipate its development over the upcoming year.”
The revamped Spanish Bay will stand out in Pebble Beach Resorts’ collection of globally acclaimed public courses, joining notable facilities like Pebble Beach Golf Links, Spyglass Hill Golf Course, The Hay, and Del Monte Golf Course. The new course is set to welcome the public on April 17, 2027, prior to the 127th U.S. Open scheduled at Pebble Beach Golf Links for the seventh time. Reservations for the new course can now be made through Pebble Beach Resort Reservations.
