Max Homa Opens Up About Living with Seborrheic Dermatitis
Max Homa, a six-time winner on the PGA Tour, has faced more than just tough opponents throughout his career. He has also been managing seborrheic dermatitis, a long-term skin condition.
Known as seb derm, this condition has been a part of the 35-year-old golfer’s life since high school. “In high school, I noticed I had dandruff or what I thought was dandruff,” he shared with Fox News Digital during Arcutis’ Free to Be Me campaign.
Homa initially dismissed the issue, thinking it was minor. “You see it on commercials, everyone has it, so no big deal,” he remarked. However, as he aged, he struggled with increased redness on his face, trying various over-the-counter remedies without long-term success.
Being often in the public eye made it challenging for him to cope with the noticeable symptoms, especially as it affected his beard area. Thanks to his wife, he finally sought help from a dermatologist.
Living with seb derm has been humbling for Homa, who revealed he was hesitant to discuss it publicly until approached by Arcutis. He hopes that by sharing his experience, others will be encouraged to seek medical advice for skin issues. “It’s not something I was ever looking to do,” he admitted, recognizing the challenges men often face in seeking medical care.
Dr. Tina Bhutani, a board-certified dermatologist, noted that approximately 10 million Americans deal with this condition, which can appear not just on the scalp, but also on the face and other areas. If untreated, it can worsen and impact quality of life, she explained.
Homa now uses Zoryve foam, which he describes as non-greasy and easy to apply, allowing him to enjoy life without constantly worrying about his skin. “The hardest part was just going to the dermatologist,” he concluded with a laugh, encouraging others to embrace treatment as a simple part of their daily routine.
