Sideline Apparel Debate: Pat Riley vs. Erik Spoelstra
MILWAUKEE (AP) — While Pat Riley and Erik Spoelstra frequently align, they differ on one notable topic: sideline attire.
A Long-Standing Disagreement
This disagreement isn’t new; they’ve held contrasting views for years about what coaches should wear. Riley, the impeccably dressed president of the Miami Heat, advocates for coaches to return to wearing suits, whereas Spoelstra, the head coach, leans towards a more casual style favored in recent seasons.
Humorous Suit Anecdotes
During a recent press conference in Milwaukee, Spoelstra shared a humorous memory: “He gave me a few suits back when I was an assistant coach, but I looked like the lead singer from the Talking Heads,” referencing David Byrne’s oversized suits. “I didn’t realize I had to tailor the suit, too.”
Riley’s Enduring Style
The suit conversation revived when the Los Angeles Lakers unveiled a statue honoring Riley, depicting him in an Armani suit. This style reflects his preferences from his coaching days with the Lakers, Knicks, and Heat, which he still upholds.
Changing Times in NBA Attire
Since the 2019-20 season’s bubble restart, the NBA has embraced a more relaxed sideline attire policy, allowing quarter-zips, casual pants, and sneakers, resulting in the decline of suits and ties. “I don’t know why we still wear suits,” remarked former Spurs coach Gregg Popovich in 2019, celebrating the shift away from formal wear.
Support for Casual Wear
Spoelstra has opted for black polos or sweaters with slacks, highlighting how this approach simplifies travel. He acknowledged Riley’s iconic look while noting the shift in corporate America toward casual dress codes.
A Compromise Proposal
Bucks coach Doc Rivers also supports the significance of attire, suggesting a compromise where coaches might wear suits during the playoffs to emphasize the occasion. “It wouldn’t be a bad idea for the playoffs because wearing suits shows the significance of the playoffs,” Rivers stated, humorously adding he’d need to get in shape since none of his current suits fit.
