Webb’s Exhibition Debut in Tempe
TEMPE, Ariz. — Logan Webb efficiently handled his two innings during his exhibition debut on Tuesday before becoming an enthusiastic observer from the dugout.
Excitement for Teammates and Upcoming WBC
Webb is eager to join the talented Team USA roster next week but is equally excited about the competitive spirit among his fellow San Francisco Giants pitchers during the early days of spring training. This includes the right-hander who followed him in the game against the Los Angeles Angels.
Admiration for Roupp
“I have a particular fondness for Roupp because I feel we pitch similarly,” Webb stated. “We often joke about competing on who can achieve more horizontal or vertical movement on our pitches, and I really enjoy watching him perform.” Webb retired all six Angels batters he faced, striking out four, while Roupp also showcased his skills, striking out two batters and allowing one walk in his inning.
Giants’ Impressive Pitching Start
The Giants have consistently delivered solid performances on the mound, winning their first four exhibition games. After a shaky start in their opening game against Seattle, they have limited opponents to just five runs over 35 innings.
Preparation for the World Baseball Classic
Webb’s pitching precision is crucial as he prepares for one last exhibition game with the Giants before joining Team USA for the World Baseball Classic (WBC). If all goes well, he could pitch twice in the tournament. “I plan to be present throughout,” Webb mentioned, hinting at possibly starting against Brazil on March 6.
Importance of Webb’s Role
With uncertainties regarding other pitchers’ availability, including reigning Cy Young Award winners and their specific plans, Webb’s participation is becoming increasingly vital for Team USA’s aspirations in the WBC. He also needs to be ready for the MLB season, which begins on March 25 with him slated to start against the New York Yankees.
Competition Among Teammates
Roupp, who is fully recovered from a knee injury, is focusing on new pitching techniques while admiring Webb. “He tells me all the time I want to pitch just like him,” Roupp said. Webb, meanwhile, expressed his enjoyment in observing the development of young Giants pitchers, emphasizing the importance of showcasing their skills this spring.
