“Being from Portugal, it’s about resilience,” Queta told Andscape. “Basketball isn’t a prominent sport there, and we lack exposure. It feels like we’re at a disadvantage. I believe in improving continually, so resilience is key for me.”
Queta’s journey has been marked by various challenges—from testing the NBA draft waters in his freshman year to injuries and transitions between teams. His perseverance has led him to become the starting center for the Celtics, following the departures of established players. This season, he’s achieving personal bests, averaging 9.7 points, 8.2 rebounds, and more, positioning himself as a potential contender for the NBA Most Improved Player award in 2026.

Queta’s NBA story is intertwined with his African roots. His parents, Mica and Djaneuba Queta, fled Guinea-Bissau during a civil war and relocated to Portugal, searching for a safe environment. Neemias was born in Lisbon and has aspirations to visit Guinea-Bissau for the first time with his mother soon.

Raised in a modest two-bedroom home in Vale da Amoreira, Queta credits his strong work ethic to his mother, who worked tirelessly as a chef. “She woke up at 4 a.m. to provide for us. That motivates me daily,” he shared.

As a person of African descent in predominantly white Portugal, Queta faced stereotypes but concentrated on being the best version of himself. Basketball became his outlet, and he transitioned from soccer—the sport he initially loved—to a promising basketball career. His professional journey began with youth teams before recognized talents propelled him to the US college scene.
Building a Future
Queta’s college stint at Utah State solidified his belief in his NBA potential. After being drafted by the Sacramento Kings, Queta faced further trials but remained focused on his goals, ultimately finding his footing with the Celtics.
