Emerson College’s Baseball Legend: Tim Neverett
At Emerson College, baseball royalty is not just about legendary players in major leagues. Tim Neverett ‘88 signifies that legacy in a unique way—not from the field, but from the press box.
A Pioneer in Sports Broadcasting
Recently, Neverett returned to Emerson’s Boston campus for a series of events with the communications department. As a student, he was a trailblazer in sports broadcasting, starting the first sports game broadcast for WECB, the campus radio station, while playing for the baseball team. His career has since flourished, covering a diverse range of sports both on and off-screen.
Current Role and Broadcasting Experience
Now serving as the play-by-play announcer for the Los Angeles Dodgers since 2019, Neverett has a wealth of Major League Baseball experience, having worked with the Boston Red Sox and Pittsburgh Pirates. His broadcasting portfolio extends to Olympic and college hockey, various levels of football, basketball, volleyball, track, lacrosse, and swimming and diving.
Advice for Aspiring Broadcasters
Neverett encourages those aspiring to enter the broadcasting field to “just find a way.” In an interview with The Beacon, he emphasized the importance of seizing every opportunity, advising that, if asked to cover an unconventional event, one should accept the challenge. “Say yes to everything,” he noted, “because once you start saying no, they stop asking.”
The Importance of Preparation
He underscored the necessity of preparation before going live on air. “Be curious. Ask questions and build relationships, which will make inquiries easier,” advised Neverett. Even seasoned professionals like him strive to enhance their skills continually. “Every day, I aim to uncover new things that others don’t know,” he stated.
A Journey Through Baseball
Baseball has always been Neverett’s passion. Despite having offers for Division I sports in both baseball and track, he chose Emerson for its urban setting and hands-on experience in broadcasting. Throughout his college years, he played in every game, captaining the team and earning MVP honors during his senior year. His versatility proved crucial in opening doors to his future.
Career Milestones and Reflections
His first significant break came as an intern with the Nashua Pirates, where he called his first baseball inning. This led to further opportunities, including working for WEEI with Red Sox Radio during their 2018 championship season. Reflecting on that time, he cherished being part of what he considers the greatest team in franchise history. Ultimately, he stressed that understanding the business side of broadcasting—along with strong interpersonal skills—is vital for those looking to enter the field.
