Derek Kneeland: A True Racer
Derek Kneeland epitomizes the spirit of racing. Besides serving as a spotter for Kyle Busch and Austin Hill at Richard Childress Racing, he also participates in Pro Late Model races whenever his schedule allows.
This Saturday, March 28, the 39-year-old will make his ARCA East debut at Hickory Motor Speedway, driving the Pinnacle Racing Group No. 28 car. For several years, Kneeland has been a crucial part of the PRG driver development program, collaborating with talents like Connor Mosack, Connor Zilisch, and Brenden Queen. His credibility earned him the opportunity to race, as recognized by team owners Mark and Jerry Webb.
Kneeland initially did not think the logistics would work in favor of this opportunity. He recalled discussing his latest Late Model race with crew chief Shane Huffman and the Webbs, who emphasized that he needed more laps. Although the idea was floated over the past two years, it only became serious when Huffman called him post-Daytona to offer him the seat at Hickory.
Expecting a joke, Kneeland was surprised that the offer was genuine. Accepting the chance would mean missing Cup Series practice and the O’Reilly Series race, so he needed permission from his bosses at Richard Childress Racing. Thankfully, they all encouraged him to take the opportunity, even offering valuable advice from fellow drivers like Jesse Love and Corey Heim.
Kneeland views himself as a “short track guy from Maine” who hasn’t secured a Late Model victory in his home region. He feels a sense of obligation to acknowledge other deserving drivers from New England, stating that many local racers could also benefit from such chances. However, he appreciates the support and recognition from his team.
With a unique opportunity ahead of him, Kneeland acknowledges the high level of competition he will face. While he may have more laps at Hickory than many contenders, the talent in the field is impressive. He plans to reach out for guidance and make the most of this experience.
Ultimately, Kneeland is grateful for this once-in-a-lifetime chance and intends to soak it all in. Understanding the effort and resources that go into racing, he is excited to make memories at Hickory. He knows this could be his singular shot at a national-level race and is determined to embrace the experience fully.
