Daniel Berger Leads at Arnold Palmer Invitational
ORLANDO, Fla. — Daniel Berger performs particularly well in Florida during March. For the rest of the field on Friday at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, Bay Hill resembled a preview of the challenging conditions one might expect at the U.S. Open.
Strong Performance Amid Tough Conditions
Berger showcased his skills under these demanding circumstances, relying on consistent hitting of fairways and greens. He felt equally confident with his long putts, securing five birdies in a round of 4-under 68, which put him in a commanding five-shot lead.
Player Reflections on Patience
“You’ve got to remain patient and utilize what the course offers,” Berger noted. “When chances arise, it’s crucial to capitalize because they’re few and far between.” His score stands at 13-under 131.
Competitors’ Efforts
Akshay Bhatia had the lowest round of the day with a 66, moving to within five shots of the leader. Others like Ludvig Åberg (71), Collin Morikawa (71), and Sahith Theegala (67) trailed by another stroke.
Challenging Greens
Maintaining patience was no easy feat. “The greens felt like they were set for Sunday when it’s only Friday,” remarked Harris English after scoring a tough 72. “I might have fixed just three ball marks today because they were hard to find. It felt like we were playing a U.S. Open in spring.” Morikawa even created a color chart for the increasingly dry greens.
Struggles for Others
Ben Griffin faced a challenging 30-foot par putt on the 18th, which left him just inside the cut line of 2-over 146. Scottie Scheffler encountered his own frustrations when a bunker shot on 15 rolled off the green. He later expressed disbelief about the difficult conditions, indicating they would become even more challenging over the weekend.
Looking Ahead
Berger continues to lead but knows the competition isn’t letting up. He began his round with a birdie putt from 25 feet and maintained his composure on the challenging greens, ensuring he doesn’t become too comfortable. This tournament is significant for him as a victory would secure him a spot at the Masters, a notable goal for this week.
