Phoenix Raceway (Avondale, Ariz.) — The leadership at Team Penske welcomed a satisfying win, particularly from Ryan Blaney, as he secured a victory on Sunday in the NASCAR Cup Series race.
Not only did Blaney earn the first NASCAR win for Penske this season, but he also helped to complete a sweep of both INDYCAR and Cup victories for the organization, which uniquely operates both series from its base in North Carolina. Blaney had attended the INDYCAR race the previous day alongside team owner Roger Penske.
“Winning for Roger is incredibly important, especially considering how much the INDYCAR team pushes us,” remarked Blaney, driver of the No. 12 car, during his post-race interview.
With a friend, Josef Newgarden, who won the day before’s INDYCAR race sporting a Blaney shirt, the driver celebrated his victory at the one-mile track where he was victorious in the previous season’s finale.
Here are the key takeaways from the Cup race on Sunday:
1. Blaney’s Resilience Shines
The 2023 Cup champion, Blaney, faced challenges with two problematic pit stops due to loose wheels but managed to regain ground with a two-tire stop that enhanced his track position, ultimately fending off Christopher Bell.
“I’m really proud of the team for their persistence today, and it’s fantastic to win here again just months later,” said Blaney.
