Revenge in the Finals
Few teams have managed to defeat Katerina Siniakova and Taylor Townsend before Saturday’s Indian Wells doubles final, but Anna Danilina and Aleksandra Krunic were among those few. The duo had previously triumphed over Siniakova and Townsend twice this past year, first in the 2025 Roland Garros quarterfinals and again in the Australian Open quarterfinals.
A Moment of Glory
This time, Siniakova and Townsend exacted their revenge. The No. 3 seeds secured a 7-6 (4), 6-4 victory over Danilina and Krunic in 1 hour and 34 minutes, marking their fourth title together.
Championships Count
All four of their titles have come at major tournaments, including victories at the 2024 Wimbledon, the 2025 Australian Open, and last year’s WTA 1000 in Dubai. This win grants Townsend her first Indian Wells title, while Siniakova celebrates her second, following her 2023 win with partner Barbora Krejcikova.
Success on the Court
Their latest triumph enhances a formidable record for both former World No. 1 players. Siniakova now boasts an impressive 34 doubles titles on the WTA Tour, including 10 Grand Slam doubles and 11 mixed doubles titles, alongside two Olympic gold medals. Townsend has reached 13 career WTA doubles titles and holds three WTA 1000 trophies.
Looking Ahead
With the WTA Finals in sight, it may be early in the year, but Siniakova and Townsend’s progress positions them favorably within the top-eight rankings, making them strong contenders for a return to Riyadh later this year. Danilina and Krunic also solidified their position with another successful run, reaching semifinals in every tournament this season.
Road to the Final
Both the No. 3 and No. 5 seeds demonstrated dominance throughout the tournament, reaching the finals without losing a set. Siniakova and Townsend’s path included a win over last year’s champion Demi Schuurs and a decisive semi-final victory over the No. 1 seeds, Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini.
Overcoming Challenges
Despite securing their final victory in straight sets, the match presented challenges. The first set remained competitive, marked by several crucial deciding points that ultimately favored Siniakova and Townsend. They maintained their composure in the second set, closing out the win despite a brief rally from Danilina and Krunic, who leveled the game to 4-4 before succumbing to their opponents’ steadiness.
