Franz Wagner’s Continued Absence
Orlando Magic forward Franz Wagner remained sidelined as the team faced the Oklahoma City Thunder at the Kia Center, marking their second consecutive defeat. The Magic lost the game 113-108 after trailing by as much as 18 points in the first half.
Rehabilitation Progress
It remains uncertain if Wagner will return before the end of the regular season as he continues to recover from a high left ankle sprain. This contest against the Thunder marked Wagner’s 40th missed game this season, a situation he described as “very frustrating.”
Wagner’s Experience with Injury
After suffering the injury on December 7 in New York, Wagner anticipated a quicker recovery. “Going into it, I was expecting to feel really good within like 4-6 weeks,” he explained to the Orlando Sentinel, reflecting on the challenging recovery process.
Attempted Comebacks
Wagner has tried to return twice, playing briefly in mid-January in Europe and again before the NBA All-Star break, but both times saw the return of pain, indicating a need for more healing time. “I take responsibility for pushing to play in those games, and it was probably too soon,” he acknowledged.
Desire to Contribute
As the playoffs approach, time is of the essence. Wagner feels the pressure to contribute and stated, “I want to be available for the team… but at this point, I just want to be healthy and finish my rehab.”
Current Status of Wagner and Teammates
Magic coach Jamahl Mosley reported that Wagner has begun light contact practices but hasn’t played in live games yet. Despite their recent struggles, the Magic hold a strong position in the East, currently sixth at 38-30. The next challenge involves a matchup with the Charlotte Hornets, a team they’ve previously struggled against.
Coach and Team Mindset
Magic guard Desmond Bane expressed confidence in the team’s mindset, stating, “We just won seven games in a row… We’ve got to go and get a game against Charlotte.” Despite the setbacks, the team remains focused on their next opportunity.
