Cubs Manager Impressed by Moises Ballesteros’ Power Hitting
MESA, Ariz. — Cubs manager Craig Counsell expressed his admiration for the power displayed by catcher Moises Ballesteros, indicating that more impressive hits are on the way.
The focus was on Ballesteros’ impressive home runs of 441 and 423 feet during a recent Cactus League matchup against the Angels at Sloan Park.
“Moises has continued to demonstrate the talent he showed last year during his brief time with us,” Counsell noted. “He’s a natural hitter with immense potential. I jokingly advised the hitting coaches to leave him alone.”
This statement was made in jest, but it carries some truth. “During a team meeting this spring, I humorously suggested to the hitting coaches, ‘Maybe you should avoid Ballesteros.’ They seemed to take it seriously,” Counsell added.
After meeting with Ballesteros on Friday, Counsell reassured the young player that he would secure a spot on the team as the primary designated hitter for the upcoming season. He sensed Ballesteros was feeling “unjustifiably anxious” about this, so he addressed it right away.
“Moises has truly earned this chance,” said Counsell. “When a player has options, they need to make a compelling case to get into the lineup. They often need to go the extra mile to secure that opportunity.”
Ballesteros, already a powerful hitter at just 22, showcased his skills with back-to-back home runs against the Angels. He entered Friday’s game boasting a .355 batting average and a 1.007 OPS over 31 Cactus League at-bats, including two doubles and the home runs. “I’m focusing on timing and being selective with pitches,” Ballesteros remarked. “Staying healthy is crucial.”
