Spurs Fans Respond to Disparaging Comments
SAN ANTONIO — A viral video captured during the San Antonio Spurs’ victory over the Phoenix Suns featured a woman in the crowd making derogatory remarks about Hispanic fans. The fans of the Spurs quickly took action in response.
TikTok user @inluvwganineee shared footage from the game where a woman reacted to a comment from someone named Chris, who said, “A lot of crazy Hispanic fans.” The woman responded, “All Hispanic! How can they afford it?”
In light of the video’s circulation, the Spurs organization issued a statement expressing pride in their connection to San Antonio’s vibrant Latino community. They emphasized that inclusion is fundamental to the team, aiming to create a welcoming atmosphere that values respect across all ethnicities. The closing phrase, “Por Vida,” reflects the organization’s commitment to this ethos.
Latino culture plays a significant role in San Antonio, where 64.6% of its 1.5 million residents identify as Hispanic or Latino, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. As the Texas city closest to Mexico, it sees everyday cross-border commutes, with preparations already underway for the annual Fiesta San Antonio, a major cultural celebration that begins on April 16.
Following the video spread, Spurs fans united to show their pride. Notable Spurs supporter Shea Serrano indicated on X that he intends to change his name legally to “Crazy Hispanic Fan.” During a postgame press event, Spurs All-Star De’Aaron Fox expressed disbelief over the video, linking it to his own experiences growing up in Texas.
Throughout Saturday’s game, attendees proudly wore “Crazy Hispanic Fan” shirts they had rapidly designed after the incident. Frank Soliz, a 37-year-old business owner, collaborated with friends to create these shirts, asserting a shared identity as proud Hispanic fans of the Spurs.
Despite the initial negative comments, fans showed a strong sense of community and humor towards the situation. Many, like AJ Reygadas, created their own versions of the shirts, emphasizing that they prefer to embrace the moment rather than take it personally. The Spurs fanbase demonstrated the spirit of unity and inclusiveness that defines their community.
