Abhishek Sharma’s Journey in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup
Abhishek Sharma entered the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup as the top-ranked batter, expected to showcase his aggressive strokeplay after a successful 2025 season. However, the tournament began poorly for the 25-year-old, who faced three consecutive ducks and several low scores, raising concerns about his place in the team.
Despite a rocky start, Abhishek regained his form at a pivotal moment. He scored a solid 55 against Zimbabwe during the Super 8 stage, suggesting a potential turnaround. His performance peaked in the final against New Zealand, where he hit a remarkable 52 runs off just 21 balls, partnering with Sanju Samson to establish a 98-run opening stand that helped secure India’s championship victory.
Insights from Teammate Nehal Wadhera
In a conversation with TOI, Nehal Wadhera, Abhishek’s childhood friend and Punjab teammate, reflected on Abhishek’s journey, noting his talent was evident from a young age. “We’ve played together since Under-14, and he always had those hitting skills,” Wadhera mentioned.
Wadhera shared a notable Under-16 match where Abhishek demonstrated his ability to thrive under pressure. “In a championship game against Gujarat, we chased down 410 runs with Abhishek and Shubman leading the charge, scoring 150 and 180 respectively. We always recognized his immense potential,” he added.
Work Ethic and Mentorship
Wadhera emphasized that the aggressive player the world sees today is a result of natural talent combined with dedicated hard work. “We always knew he was capable, but he has refined his skills, especially during powerplay overs, thanks to guidance from Yuvraj Singh and his father,” he stated.
The Impact of Ricky Ponting
On the topic of mentorship, Wadhera discussed the influence of Punjab Kings head coach Ricky Ponting, recalling their first meeting at a camp in Dharamshala. “He’s a very positive person who fosters a happy team environment. His encouragement helped me develop my game, especially against fast bowlers,” Wadhera remarked.
Leadership at Punjab Kings
As a member of the Punjab Kings, Wadhera highlighted the unique leadership style of captain Shreyas Iyer. “He promotes a free-spirited approach to gameplay, instilling confidence in players. This environment allows us to express ourselves freely,” he said, also noting his own steady growth since debuting in the IPL.
Focus on Team Success
Looking forward, Wadhera aims for collective success rather than individual accolades, especially after last season’s near miss for the Punjab Kings. “My personal objectives will be shared as they are accomplished. Right now, our primary goal is to win the championship,” he stated, expressing determination to transform last year’s heartbreak into triumph.
