Seattle Kraken Owner Pursues NBA Expansion Franchise
SEATTLE – Samantha Holloway, co-owner of the Seattle Kraken, is spearheading efforts to bid for an NBA expansion team following the league’s announcement to officially consider expansion into Seattle and Las Vegas.
Commitment to Bringing the NBA Back
Kraken CEO Tod Leiweke highlighted their ongoing mission to reintroduce NBA basketball to Seattle, stating, “We started this journey eight years ago intentful to bring the NBA back, and we are going to lean in.” He expressed excitement over recent developments, suggesting that their groundwork is well-prepared for future opportunities.
A Strategic Move with Climate Pledge Arena
The timing of the Kraken’s announcement regarding their majority ownership of Climate Pledge Arena aligns with the NBA’s Board of Governors meeting in New York City, which will discuss expansion plans. The Kraken established One Roof Sports and Entertainment to oversee their related sports ventures, including the arena and community iceplex.
Advantages of Arena Ownership
Owning the arena significantly boosts their bid’s chances. Competing groups wanting to secure a team would need to negotiate a lease with One Roof S&E or create a new venue, which won’t be a concern for the Kraken.
Preparation for NBA Teams
Facility readiness is also on the agenda, with locker room space designated for NBA teams, although further modifications are necessary. Establishing a training facility and a G-League affiliate will also be pivotal for the future ownership group.
Track Record and Future Prospects
Leiweke expressed confidence in their experienced ownership group, emphasizing their commitment to avoiding mistakes while successfully navigating the complexities of this venture. He praised Holloway’s leadership abilities, signaling their readiness for the potential return of the Sonics.
Looking Ahead to Expansion Votes
The current exploration for NBA expansion was voted on in New York, eyeing the start of play for new teams in the 2028-29 season. A definitive decision on this expansion is expected at the next NBA Board of Governors meeting in Las Vegas in July, raising hopes for Seattle’s return to the NBA scene.
